Hip Replacement and TENS

The hip is one of the body’s largest joints. It’s a “ball-and-socket” joint. The socket is formed by the acetabulum, which is part of the large pelvis bone. The ball is the femoral head, which is the upper end of the femur (thigh bone).

Conditions that can damage the hip joint, sometimes making hip replacement surgery necessaryinclude:

  • Osteoarthritis. Commonly known as wear-and-tear arthritis, osteoarthritis damages the slick cartilage that covers the ends of bones and helps joints move smoothly.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis. Caused by an overactive immune system, rheumatoid arthritis produces a type of inflammation that can erode cartilage and occasionally underlying bone, resulting in damaged and deformed joints.

  • Osteonecrosis. If there isn’t enough blood supplied to the ball portion of the hip joint, such as what might result from a dislocation or fracture, the bone might collapse and deform.

You might consider hip replacement if you have hip pain that:

  • Persists, despite pain medication

  • Worsens with walking, even with a cane or walker

  • Interferes with your sleep

What happens after the surgery?

Rehabilitation should begin within 24 hours after surgery. Most patients progress to walking with a cane, walker, or crutches within a day or two after surgery. As the days progress, you will increase the distance and frequency of walking.

Pain can occur after the surgery. The pain can be hard to endure, especially for seniors. Fortunately, painkillers are not the only solution. You can use a TENS Machine to alleviate the pain and help you to recover faster.

How can a TENS\EMS Machine help you with post-surgery pain?

Tens Machines release a small electrical current that travels through gel pads to the nerves and thereby block the transmission of the pain signal. TENS also helps with the production of endorphins; the body’s natural pain killer.

Using a TENS/EMS Machine is easy:

  1. Turn off the device

  2. Place the pads as shown in the image below. Be sure to clean the area beforehand.
